SUNSHINE Coast police have issued a warning over an elaborate phone scam that has hit Australia shores after doing the rounds worldwide.

The “can you hear me?” phone scam has been prolific in the United States and UK since early this year.

A call is made to a business or home number and once the person answers the scammer simply asks “can you hear me?” several times, to which most people answer with “yes”.

The scammer then records the “yes” response and ends the call.

The recording is then used to authorize payments or charges in the victim’s name, a difficult task to dispute at a later date.

Sunshine Coast Police said anyone who had received calls of this nature had “serious and legitimate reasons to be concerned”.

“We’re now sharing this post statewide as we believe it to be hitting many areas,” police warn.

Police advice to combat this phone scam :

  • Spread the word – Share this information
  • If you receive a “can you hear me?” phone call – hang up – don’t respond!
  • If you did respond with a “yes” … alert your financial institution, begin to monitor your accounts closely .. and contact ID CARE

Tilapia has been found in Obi Obi creek

Tiaro & District Landcare Group Queensland and the University of New England Armidale N S W carry out research into the population of Mary River turtles in the Mary river catchment. While trapping turtles in Obi Obi creek as part of this research a tilapia was found.

Tilapia were first introduced into Australia in the 1970s as ornamental fish and are now regarded as one of the greatest threats to Australia’s native biodiversity.

The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast Council is organizing a commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast starting on the first of August 2017 .

The name ‘Sunshine Coast’ was officially endorsed by the then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils in November, 1966 when it was agreed to utilize the name to cover the three Shires. The name was then endorsed by the Queensland Minister for Lands, Alan Fletcher, who advised that the decision would take effect from 1 August 1967.

Prior to this, the term “Near North Coast” was used.

Louise Bauer from the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Team  is very interested in sourcing any old footage and or photographs that dates back around 50 years to be included in a showing at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

If you have anything that dates back 50 years or so and are interested in contributing, please contact Louise by email at – louise.bauer@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
